Technology Campaign

A few centuries ago it was believed that all that was needed to create theatre was ‘two boards and a passion.” While this remains true hundreds of years later our appreciation of and engagement in theatre has become more and more a product of technology. Imagine a professional theatre experience without moving lights, motion control devices for scenery, hydraulic lifts, computerized sound and lighting controls. Theatre production as well as technical theatre education demands a greater reliance on twenty-first century technology.

While the School of Theatre in the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance at Florida State University continues to be one of the top theatre training programs in the nation it must find the financial resources to upgrade its technological capabilities. Our current outdated equipment compromises our production values and our ability to train students for meaningful careers in the industry. With this in mind, the School of Theatre has launched a campaign to develop a Theatre Technology Fund that will over the next five years generate over $650,000 to purchase and update equipment in all areas of theatre technology.

Through this Fund the School of Theatre will be able to:

  • Significantly improve the quality of education for those students pursuing a degree in the areas of theatre technology.
  • Attract the best and brightest students from across the country with career aspiration in technical theatre.
  • Provide a safe “laboratory” environment for all students and faculty members working on theatre productions.
  • Enhance the quality of productions offered by the School of Theatre.

To achieve this goal we must depend on the generosity of parents, alumni and friends of the School of Theatre. For more information on how you can become involved in this campaign please contact Fred Salancy, Assistant Dean of Fine Arts, at (850) 644-3911.
